June 2021 SILT Plant BioBlitz

Slide2.PNG

We are excited to announce the June 2021 Savary Island Land Trust Plant BioBlitz. Please help us discover the plant biodiversity in Savary’s rare ecosystems.

How to participate:

  1. Create an iNaturalist account

  2. Join the SILT Plant BioBlitz Project: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/silt-plant-bioblitz

  3. Take a picture of a plant you find on Savary

  4. Upload it as an observation on iNaturalist

Tips for using iNaturalist:

1. Disable ‘automatic upload’ to avoid using data

• Go to Settings and uncheck the box next to automatic upload

• When in a Wi-Fi zone, select upload under your observations

2. Make sure your GPS is on: It’s important for distribution data!

3. You don’t have to guess the species

• Choose the level of classification that you feel confident about

• Ex. order, family, genus, etc.

What we’ll do with the results:

  1. Post them on SILT social media pages

  2. Use BioBlitz data as a baseline to study the biodiversity of Savary Island’s rare ecosystems

  3. Select observations to feature on future SILT merchandise

Rules:

1. What NOT to post as observations:

• Garden plants: try to get plants naturally growing on Savary.

• You’re BFF: try to avoid getting people in pictures.

2. No wild guesses when choosing an ID

• If all you know is that you have a picture of a tree, and iNat’s artificial intelligence isn’t helping with the ID, leave it as ‘tree’

• Other iNat users will review your observation and make suggestions.

3.Do not disturb: avoid touching or damaging the organisms you are photographing

Fundraising Update: $179,197 raised, $20,833 more needed by Aug. 29 to save an acre of Savary forest

We are excited to share the latest in our efforts to acquire land for conservation on Savary Island.

Thanks to those who attended our fundraiser, Savarystock on Saturday July 27, where we launched the SAVE THIS FOREST CAMPAIGN.

This acre of forest land at 1306 Savary Island Road will help protect a Red-listed (highest risk) ecological community and will also protect additional elements of the Coastal Douglas Fir biogeoclimatic zone, and preserve some wildness on the Savary Island Road.  Many enjoy this walk or ride through the forest.

To save this forest, we needed to raise $200,000.  The good news is that by working with the neighbourhood and other donors over the last few months, we raised $160,000 towards the purchase.  Savarystock auctions raised another $19,167 towards the SAVE THIS FOREST CAMPAIGN.

We are very close to reaching the goal to protect this acre forever. I hope you will consider a donation.

We still need another $20,833. by August 29 to complete this deal.

Donations are tax deductible and may be made by cheque to SILT Box 141, Lund, BC V0N 2G0.
